Norwich Cathedral

Despite it’s magnitude and beauty, Norwich Cathedral is a place of peace and serenity. Slow down, take your time, and experience the iconic design, peace, and over 900 years of history in Norwich Cathedral. From the organ taking centre stage, to the prayer rooms beyond the Fonte, you’ll be in awe as the cathedral draws you in, to experience all it has to offer. Don’t forget to look up too.

Walking up to Norwich Cathedral, the first thing you’ll notice are the charming buildings that line both sides of the road just outside the cathedral walls. Take your time meandering toward the cathedral gates to admire the buildings and the independent shops. Tombland books is an antique bookshop opposite the cathedral, full of books from every era and topic, well worth a visit. As you walk through the medieval gateways, you’ll first notice the picturesque, historic buildings, then the cathedral comes into full view with its magnificent, towering spire.

Norwich Cathedral is nestled within Norwich city’s traditional defensive walls, and includes an area of 44 acres. The area immediately surrounding the Cathedral is known as The Close, in spring and summer The Close is full of spring blossoms and is a quiet, tranquil, place for a picnic whilst admiring the cathedral.

The Close

The 44-acre site of The Close sits along the bank of the River Wensum. Tree lined, cobbled avenues, with 80 listed buildings, and beautiful greens The Close is the perfect place to slow down and enjoy classic British architecture. The green spaces are perfect for a picnic whilst admiring the cathedral, the trees, and the classically English setting in the shadows of the cathedral. If you’re looking for an Instagram worthy spot in Norwich then The Close won’t disappoint with quirky alleys, picturesque homes, and hidden gems around every bend. In the spring the trees bloom creating a stunningly diverse range of colours.

Cloisters

Entering the cathedral from the dark gate brings you to the Cloisters and a quieter entrance. These walk ways give way to unique views of the cathedral, kids love to run along them, and they’re great for photos too. Along the walls and floors you’ll find a variety of information, history, and plaques dedicated to those who have passed.

The Cathedral

As you step from the shop into the Cathedral you’ll immediately feel a sense of peace and calm wash over you. It’s as if everything in the world and your mind suddenly calms. Walk straight ahead to the copper bowl in the middle of the path in front of you, and look to your right to fully take in the beauty of the cathedral.

I could write a dissertation on the beauty, history, and different parts of the cathedral but instead I’ll leave it for you to explore. Norwich cathedral is one of my favourite places in the world and it deserves a slow and patient exploration. Give yourself half a day, minimum, to really explore the cathedral, The Close, and everything it has to offer.

The cathedral offers free tours run by volunteers who are passionate about sharing the history and stories of the cathedral.
