Norfolk is a county teaming with myth, legend, and folklore, the winding streets of Norwich are no exception. In 2012, Norwich was named one of only four UNESCO Cities of Literature in England, which comes as no surprise when you delve into the world of the bookshops of Norwich.
A city rich in literary history dating back to the 14th century. Norwich is home to the National Centre for Writing, The Millennium Library, and The Norfolk & Norwich Festival.
On my wander around Norwich looking for bookshops I was on the hunt for hidden gems. The one’s not everyone is talking about, the one’s that are small and quirky and full of stories to tell. Don’t worry, I’ll mention the independents and the fabulous one’s we all love, like Waterstones, too.
Hidden Gem Bookshops
The Dormouse Bookshop on Elm Hill
Of all the bookshops I’ve visited so far, and I’ve visited a lot at this point, The Dormouse on Elm Hill is my firm favourite. A tiny bookshop, stacked high, with an array of beautiful and treasured books of all genres. The owner is welcoming and a fountain of knowledge, about all books. The Dormouse Bookshop is a treasure trove of books, an Aladdin’s cave if you will.
Address: 29 Elm Hill, Norwich, NR3 1HG, England
Tombland Book shop opposite the cathedral
Tombland bookshop is in my top ten bookshops in England. If you love antique books or rare finds it’s the place for you. They strongly believe in the freedom of literacy and this is reflected in some of the books they offer. You’ll spend hours browsing the collection and hopefully find a new favourite.
Address: 8 Tombland, Norwich, NR3 1HF, England
Independents
Bookbugs & Dragon Tales
The independent children and young adults bookshop with over 4000 titles for your little bookbugs. Enjoy a cuppa and a cookie whilst you find your next favourite read. They also run regular activities and events for all the family.
Address: 41-43 Timberhill, Norwich, NR1 3LA, England
The Book Hive
An independent bookshop in The Lanes of Norwich which forgoes the norms of bookshops. With collections and selections chosen by the booksellers leading to a unique experience. The shop hosts regular events, including a weekly quiet reading hour, author signings, launches and various other events. The Book Hive is one of the most popular independent bookshops in Norwich and well worth a visit.
Address: 53 London St, Norwich, NR2 1HL, England
Jarrold’s Department Store and Bookshop
For over 250 years Jarrold’s Department Store has been at the heart of Norwich retail. Independently owned, providing some of the best products from across Norfolk, East Anglia, and the world. Jarrold’s is a Norfolk institution, offering everything from toys and games to food, clothing, and cosmetics. During the 19th and 20th centuries Jarrold’s became a leader in print and publishing. To this day the top floor of Jarrold’s is home to hundreds of books and well worth a visit. Don’t forget to visit the basement in Jarrold’s for some delicious treats too.
Address: Jarrolds Department Store, 1-11 London Street, Norwich, Norfolk, NR2 1JF
Firm Favourites
Waterstones
No bookshop list would be complete without mentioning Waterstones. Whilst we recommend visiting independent and second hand bookshops Waterstones is a British institution and a place to never skip. They have the biggest selection in Norwich and a great section for children and families.
Address: Waterstones Norwich, Castle Street, 11-17 Castle Street, Norwich, NR2 1PB
Norwich itself is a very bookish city, full of country lanes and alleyways waiting to be explored. Tales and folklore abound in Norwich, from the Cathedral to the Castle to Elm Hill. Independent coffee shops and quirky shops, make a weekend of it and enjoy Norwich the UNESCO City of Literature.
